Tesla/Daimler Deal - its about design

Actually the 10% stake of Tesla for Daimler is not just a brilliant investment for new technology (Daimler is currently working on a new strategy for hybrid (eco-friendly) cars (availabe in june in germany, the S 400 hybrid), and Teslas electro-motor expertise fits very well with that) but its an investment into design.

Teslas new chief of design is Franz von Holzhausen who moved there from Mazda in 2008 - this tallented guy will come handy as a consultant to a new "eco-friendly" design strategy for daimler, which is trying to make a strategy fusion of high-class, but low energy-consuming cars.

Daimlers problem is, that the S class will be at the top of the high-class limousines for a while - at least from a technology point of view. But with the new versions of Audi (A8) and BMW (7) (supposed by the end of 2009) Daimler has to work on the look of their flagship, which will be changed again in 2011 in terms of design I suppose. The current version of the S class is based on the W221 from 2005, and is just undergoing several facelifts.

What a cool and astouning site: 10x10 gives you a view on the latest news of the 100 most imtortant news sources. And even from a designer´s point of view, they have done a great job. There are 100 photos taken from the sources article, and they are used as a menu.

Webdesign for free...

Well, german buerocracy at it´s best: lawyers now said, that webdesign isn´t of that high value in a copyright way, that it is allowed to take a design of a website, change the logo, and use it for your company. Beside that this is a stupid idea for every company, I can´t understand the government to let such things happen: every work you do with your creativity, with your brain has to be protected in a certain way by law. At least everybody should be able to decide on his own what should happen with his work. Should it be licensed under creative-commons? Ok, why not.

So ebay gets a new design though I´ve to say, that it´s not a real redesign: it´s useful additions, like personalized windows and helpful links. I think they are going into a right direction - but they have to take further steps: ebay is not suitable for any kind of disabled person, and it´s quite complicated. The design has to support the usability which is not an easy job, because ebay is just quite complicated because of all these different structures and interfaces for sellers, buyers, statistics....should we help you out? ;-)

Designers truth

This is why designers are mostly negatively compared with "artists", and some do feel like that. I mostly like the last point: The rest of the world counts. That´s what designer really have to focus on in order to be really successful. And as typographie-guru Wolfgang Beinert teached us, it`s the most important point to be empathic with yur customers.

I mean i am really frustrated: I always thought that "Ralph-Siegel", one of the famoust and succesfulliest song-writers in germany, is just doing a bad job: i mean, it is ok, when you make bad songs, and people love them. its business, you know?
